1908 Olympic Gold Medal winning yachtsman

John Buchanan was born on the 1st January 1884 in Rhu. Like all the crew members aboard Thomas Glen-Coats’ 'Hera' in the 12-metre class at the 1908 Olympics, John Buchanan was a member of the Royal Clyde Yacht Club. He was a farmer and an enthusiastic sailor for many years who in 1936 won the Tarbert Cup sailing his 8-metre boat 'Falcon'. He died in Rhu on the 25th November 1943.

John was a member of the Hera's crew that also contained fellow local Helensburgh GP Dr Arthur Drummond Downes

If there ever was a first family of Wimbledon it is the Sterry-Cooper alliance

Charlotte was born on 22nd September 1870 in Ealing, London.

Nicknamed "Chattie" she was a tall, slender, and elegant woman in appearance but a deceptively powerful athlete who became the first woman to win an Olympic gold medal. She won the tennis singles at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, France where women were allowed to participate for the first time. She followed this up with a second gold medal, winning the mixed doubles with partner, Reginald Doherty.

Born in Old Kilpatrick on the north bank of the River Clyde in 1960, Colin Dalgleish has lived in Helensburgh since he was 4 years old. He has enjoyed a successful amateur golf career at boys, youths and senior level, culminating in his appointment as Captain of the 2007 and 2009 Great Britain & Ireland Walker Cup Teams against the United States.

1908 Olympic Gold Medal winning yachtsman

Dr Arthur Drummond Downes was born on 23rd February 1883 in Kelvinside, the youngest of five sons of a wealthy Glasgow paper manufacturer.

Arthur was a member of the 1908 Olympic Gold Medal winning team in the 12 metre Class in the Yacht Hera. At the 1908 Summer Olympics four sailing events were contested - London had the honour of holding the first Olympic regatta. Three were held from July 27 to July 29 1908 on the Solent, whilst the 12 metre class contested its races on August 11th to the 12th on the River Clyde.
