Hike 4 Heroes Summer 2010

Hike 4 Heroes

Plans are at an embryonic stage for Helensburgh Heroes next community fund raising event. Destined for the Summer of 2010, the Charity hopes to combine its twin aims of raising national awareness of talented men and woman who have hailed from the area, with the raising of funds for much needed local arts, leisure and cultural facilities, by organising an innovative sponsored walk.

The Charity is hoping to arrange a 15 day Charity Walk from Helensburgh - birthplace of John Logie Baird, TV Pioneer - to the Bar Italia, Frith Street in London's Soho, the site of Baird's first demonstration of Television in 1926. Covering a total distance of 469 MILES (avoiding motorways !!), the walk would be completed in fifteen 31 mile sections.

The dates to pencil in the diary are: Depart Helensburgh Saturday 10th July 2010 - arrive in Soho on Saturday 24th July 2010. Return home on Sunday 25th July.

Each daily section, would where possible, feature a location that has relevance to one of our 'Heroes' achievements. For example the very first section may include a 'stop' at the Botanic Gardens in Glasgow, to acknowledge the work of Sir William Jackson Hooker, the pioneering Victorian Botanist who lived in Helensburgh.

Walkers would set off at around 8.30am each day with each section being completed by no later than 6.00pm each day. This is not a race! - an average 4 mile sper hour would be the planned pace.

The route would see the Hike move from Helensburgh through Glasgow, Ayrshire, The Lakes, Bradford, Manchester, Midlands, Northants, Hertfordshire finally ending in the heart of London. Stops would include the National Museum of Television, Granada Studios amongst many other relevant locations.

Walkers - and the walk will be open to anyone - can either walk a mile or two on a particular section, can pick and chose which selections they wish to walk, or can sign up to complete the entire route. All the Charity asks is that each walker obtains some sponsorship for the number of miles that they chose to complete.

As you can imagine, an event of this nature involves a huge amount of planning and organising - training sessions, obtaining corporate sponsorship, clothing, hotel accommodation, support teams, communications etc - so all we ask at this stage is for you to register an interest now. The Charity can then determine the level of interest before pushing the 'Green for Go' button!

We believe that we can make this one of the largest community projects of 2010 - and we may even record an official Hike 4 Heroes song to accompany the walk - so please contact us today if you wish to either participate, assist with organisation, sponsor the event, or simply want to find out more.

Please can you complete the CONTACT FORM HERE and let us know how you want to be involved with Hike 4 Heroes.
